One of the perks of winning honorable mention in the WOW! Women on Writing Flash Fiction Contest is that the honor also comes with a $20  Amazon Gift Certificate, which I received earlier this week.  Woo hoo!  Now I am super excited about the prospect of new books (who wouldn't be!) but as I tend to be pretty self-indulgent when it comes to books, when one comes out that I am dying to read, I buy it.  So, my "to buy" list remains pretty short, especially since obtaining a Kindle. (Oh, how I love you, Instant Gratification!)  What I would really like is to use my my gift certificate to discover something new.

Soooooooooooooo. . . I am opening myself up for suggestions!  Turn me on to something new and exciting!  This where you are probably asking yourself, but what in the world does this woman actually like to read?  Excellent question!  To give you an idea of my varied reading tastes, I am currently dividing my time right now between Margaret Atwood's Blind Assassin, Richelle Mead's Iron Crowned, and Matt Bell's How They Were Found.  I am currently loving them all to the point where I am neglecting my writing/crusading/day job that pays my bills/household chores.  I also love Jim Butcher's writing to an obsessive point and have a huge soft spot for YA literature.  I am a sucker for a great series.

My only request is, please, no more vampire fiction.  I have overdosed on something I was never really that crazy about to begin with.  The only vampires I plan to read about in the near future are Richelle Mead's when her new series comes out later this year.  Though feel free to try and change my mind if you have read or written something really amazing that centers around vampires.  I may be stubborn, but not to the point where I will sacrifice an excellent reading experience.  :)

Okay, that's it.  Please leave reading suggestions as a comment, and you will totally make my day.  Crusaders with books out -- I would especially love to read your novel or short story collection so don't be afraid to indulge in some blatant self-promotion.

Happy Reading!

-Di

Hello, Miss Diane! I'm going to try to keep this as short as I can (which might not be as difficult as I think given the caveat regarding vampire fiction - I love my vamps).

Paint it Black and/or White Oleander by Janet Fitch (beware, though: her novels are very dark)
Still Alice by Lisa Genova (again, it's a heart-breaker)
King Rat by China Mieville (awesome urban fantasy completely sans vampires)
The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger
Personal Demons, Demon Inside and Demon Possessed by Stacia Kane (yes, it's a series)

There you be - Crystal's picks! Lol... Enjoy. :-)

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Paper Towns by John Green
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks by E Lockhart
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
and I just finished reading House Rules - awesome book by Jodi Picoult

Congrats! And enjoy your new reads!

Fellow crusader! Nice to meet you

Hmmm. It is always hard to suggest to others, because people's tastes are so different.
My top five books from last year were
The Highest Tide (YA) About a boy who loves ocean creatures.
Before I Fall (YA) Groundhogs day meets mean girls.
The Sky is Everywhere (YA) Beautifully written book about a girl falling in love, among other things.
Stolen (Aussie YA. So. Good.) A young girl is kidnapped and struggles to define how she feels about the kidnapper.
and The Shadow of the Wind, a reread of a really fantastic book, a big sweeping tale set post-Spanish Civil War.

I really enjoyed Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick.

If you like character-driven fantasy, I would recommend my friend Amy Rose Davis's book, Ravenmarked. http://www.amazon.com/Ravenmarked-The-Taurin-Chronicles-ebook/dp/B004LGS312/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298764442&sr=8-1

Don't let the fact that she's an indie author dissuade you. This girl can sling words around like nobody's business. And the price is right.

Wow, thank you guys so much for the suggestions! I actually own a few of the ones recommended (Hunger Games and the books by Janet Fitch), but the others I am eagerly looking forward to exploring on Amazon very soon to narrow down my selection. Something tells me I am probably going to spend beyond my $20 gift certificate. Not that this is a bad thing. :) I will let you know what I settle on and hopefully eventually post some reviews.

Thanks again, and anyone else who has suggestions, keep 'em coming!
