On a personal note, the last few weeks have been a bit of a roller coaster. I had a planned surgery on August 14, but it led to unexpected complications and I ended up in the hospital for nine days and had to have a second surgery during that time. I've been home for a week now and am slowly starting to feel more like myself. A nice way to celebrate health, home, and happiness is with a piece of flash fiction. Chicago Literary Writers

Chicago Literary Writers is a writing group that I had the extreme fortune of falling into when it was first starting 13 years ago. For the last decade or so, I've been coordinating meetings and managing applications for membership. CLW is one of the few things that has stayed really consistent in my life for more than a decade and it's helped show me the importance of having a community of writers to lean on and learn from. One of our members recently volunteered to create a snazzy new website for us, and I'm happy to report that our new website is now live and exceeding expectations. Check it out here!

Longlisted!
My chapbook of holiday themed flash fiction We're All Just Trying to Make It to January 2nd was longlisted for Thirty West's 4th Annual Chapbook Contest! I have to wait a few weeks to find out if I made the shortlist, but it's always nice to know that someone must've liked my work enough for it to escape the first cut. Congrats to all my fellow writers who also made the longlist!

I'm excited to share the news that one of my short stories Westbound on a Tank of Desperate Hope has been short listed for Askance Publishing's Short Story Competition. It was one of a dozen that made the cut. I don't enter many writing contests, but I've been pushing myself to take more chances and so I'm thrilled to have made it this far in the competition. Whether my story is selected as a winner or not, it's wonderful to know that the judges responded positively enough to shortlist it. You can view the shortlist here.
Two Flashes Up at OJAL

I am thrilled to announce that I have two flash fictions up over at Open: Journal of Arts and Letters.
Rotten Apple is a short piece that I wrote almost 10 years ago in an online flash fiction workshop. I recently found it buried in a folder of forgotten flash. It still had the notes from the workshop instructor attached to it. I was prepared to hate it because it was written so long ago, but it was like running into an old friend. I realized it was written at a time when I wasn't as confident about sending out my work. I made some revisions and sent it out into the world. OJAL has given it a lovely home.
Affair is much more recent, but I like that these two pieces found a home together. They suit each other.
